KEY GUIDELINES FOR STUD DOGS OWNERS

Back to homepage

The Royal Kennel Club advise the following:-

Written Contract should be used, covering fee structures, mating conditions, and what happens if the bitch does not conceive.

The RKC advises that stud dogs must be fully health tested, and possesses a good temperament and conformation.

Stud dogs should complement the bitch, not be closely related, and owners should provide evidence of health certificates, use a written contract, and avoid overusing popular sires to maintain genetic diversity.

Health testing for Chow Chows, supported by the Royal Kennel Club and the Chow Chow Breed Council, focuses on mitigating hereditary conditions like hip dysplacia and eye issues. Essential tests included BVA/KC Hip and Elbow Scoring, annual Eye Testing, and the Breed Council's Bronze/Silver,Gold Health Assessment.

Before the mating occurs, it is important that a detailed written stud dog contract is agreed upon and signed to prevent any future confusion.

Ensure that a copy of your signed contracts are filed away in a safe place.

The terms and conditions of a mating do not fall within the jurisdiction of The Royal Kennel Club. It is therefore advisable that any breeding terms or stud fees should be arranged by mutual agreement in writing between owner of the stud dog and the owner of the bitch before a mating takes place.
